Cultivating our Danish Ties

Over the past two months, Riis was delighted to welcome several Danish visitors to New York City. In mid-June, we met with Denmark’s Minister for Social Affairs and Senior Citizens, Astrid Krag, and later hosted a wonderful group of Danish teens for a week as part of our annual Danish Exchange program!

Ms. Krag and her team visited our Queensbridge site, meeting with our executive and associate executive directors, as well as a number of program staff. We enjoyed giving the team a tour of Riis, discussing one another’s work, and learning more about social services in Denmark.

In July, we welcomed six Danish teens and their chaperones to NYC for a week of exploration and intercultural exchange. Six Riis Academy teens enjoyed getting to know their new peers during this week of enriching experiences. Participants attended a NYCFC soccer game at Yankee stadium, went to a broadway show, watched Fourth of July fireworks in Long Island City, visited Central Park, dined in downtown Flushing, went to the Noguchi Museum and the Museum of Natural History, and much more!

After being on hiatus due to COVID-19, it was wonderful to resume this program, which gives young people the chance to create intercultural bonds and travel internationally. Next summer, the same teens from Riis will travel to Denmark for a week! Thank you to our staff for planning and executing such enriching experiences for everyone involved.
