Job Title: Group Leader
Department: Youth Services

Riis Settlement is seeking an experienced individual who will assist in the successful operation of the Riis Academy Afterschool program. Group Leaders are responsible for providing a safe and positive environment for school-age children where learning and interaction with staff and peers will enhance their academic and personal growth, as well as, provide overall leadership and supervision to the group. Seasonal position: continuation of position is contingent on funding availability and/or job performance. Benefits not included.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children in the program by providing close supervision of all activities.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation (incident/accident/behavior reports, attendance & sign-in/sign-out sheets).
  • Assist children with homework and guide students in their academic growth.
  • Participate with the children in all enrichment activities such as sports, art, dance, drama, etc.
  • Create and conduct innovative age-appropriate activities and develop lesson plans for activities that include STEM, Literacy, Healthy Living, Art, Global Studies, Prevention and Leadership.
  • Communicate with families, on a weekly basis, about their children’s strengths and areas needing attention.
  • Prepare the learning environment, by creating a welcoming space that exhibits student work.
  • Work as part of a collaborative team; provide support to other Specialists and Group Leaders in implementing activities.
  • Understand and communicate the Jacob Riis philosophy and the goals of the Riis Academy Afterschool program to the participants and parents.
  • Adhere to all Department of Health and New York State OCFS policies and standards.
  • Communicate effectively with peers, participants, supervisors, and school administration.
  • Actively participate in all training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.

Qualifications

  • Current College student or Graduate with coursework in child development or a related field in which working with children is the focus.
  • Two years of experience working with youth and planning activities; two years of experience working with elementary school population.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish & English)
  • All staff are expected to be committed to the mission, vision, and values of Riis Settlement, which includes involvement in quality improvement activities and a willingness to work within a culturally diverse environment.
  • Candidate must successfully complete the following: National Sex Offender Registry; NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Clearance Review Background Check; 3 Reference Checks; Physical with updated TB Test (Fees may apply)
