Riis Academy Annual Science Fair

Riis Academy was buzzing with curiosity and creativity at this year’s Science Fair! Our talented youth participants worked in groups to design, test, and present their experiments to a panel of judges. From exploring the connection between rhythm and biology in Heart of Music, to the exciting chemical reactions behind Fizzy Balloon Time, students demonstrated both teamwork and scientific thinking. Other standout projects included The Oxidation of Invisible Ink, which uncovered the chemistry behind hidden messages, and Brain Processing of Senses, an engaging look at how our minds interpret the world around us. Each group confidently shared their research, showcasing not only what they discovered but how they learned it together.

The event was a true celebration of hard work and discovery. After thoughtful deliberation, judges presented awards to recognize outstanding projects and presentations, applauding the dedication and innovation of all participants. First place for elementary school was awarded to PS 166 – The Oxidation of Citric Acid, second place to Queensbridge – Are You Left or Right-Brained?, and third place to CS 111 – Brain Processing of Senses. Middle school first place was presented to CS 111 – The Power of Electrolytes & Electroconductivity, second place to Queensbridge – Potato Battery, and third place to Ravenswood – How to Make Oobleck. Every student gained valuable experience in critical thinking and public speaking.

The Fair concluded on a high note with a free dinner for all attendees, giving students, families, and staff a chance to celebrate together. Congratulations to our young scientists!
