Our community garden in Queensbridge has undergone a mini makeover, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our older adults and volunteers!
In the last few months, we hosted several gardening sessions to bring new life and color to our community spaces. During one special intergenerational event, Riis Academy joined our older adult participants to plant flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Promoting a healthier and more sustainable environment is key to a better quality of life, and we were thrilled to see our youth join in the fun. Together, they built meaningful intergenerational connections, shared a sense of purpose, and learned new gardening techniques—all while enhancing their neighborhood.
On another occasion, our older adult participants and volunteers refreshed an in-ground garden, planting New York native species to further beautify the outdoor space around the community center. Altogether, we planted begonias, ferns, andromedas, and a sweet potato vine—all hardy enough to thrive through the fall season.
This project not only enriched our gardens but also strengthened our community bonds.
