We are thrilled to celebrate former Riis Academy participant Erick Gonzalez, recipient of the 2025 CITC Young Leader of the Year Award from New York City Football Club. This prestigious honor recognizes Erick’s outstanding leadership, dedication, and positive influence among his peers.
Erick’s journey with Riis Settlement began in our Learn & Earn program at Riis Academy–InfoTech, where he developed skills for college and career success. As part of Learn & Earn, he interned with NYCFC, supporting their Soccer Bloc program, which provides free soccer programming to youth ages 6–14 across all five boroughs. Erick connected with young athletes and even met professional soccer players from Manchester City F.C. NYCFC was so impressed that they brought him back as a youth coach with City in the Community (CITC).
This past summer, Erick participated in our Danish Exchange Program, traveling to Ribe, Denmark—the hometown of our founder, Jacob A. Riis. There, he stayed with host families, explored Viking history, and returned with lasting friendships and a broader worldview.
In Erick’s own words:
“I couldn’t be where I am without Riis Settlement and the people who helped me. The efforts they made to push me out of my comfort zone and meet amazing people helped me more than I can tell you. They are the best.”
