Riis Settlement seeks experienced, hard-working, and creative Substitute ESOL instructors to provide on-call coverage for our adult ESOL classes while the regular instructor cannot work. The Substitute ESOL instructor will provide in-person instruction during regular class time, as needed until the regular instructor can return to work. Class schedules include morning (9:00 – 12:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday), evening (6:00 – 9:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday), and Saturday (9:30 am – 4:00 pm) at two program sites in Long Island City and Astoria, Queens. The ESOL Instructor will work within the Immigrant Services Program to provide limited English proficient adults with contextualized instruction that gives students English language skills to effectively participate in the English-speaking environment in which they live. Successful candidates will have experience creating student-centered learning environments, using a communicative approach, and incorporating civic engagement, job readiness, and technology in the classroom. The instructor fosters a classroom environment that offers participants the resources and support needed to help them grow and achieve self-sufficiency.
