The Astoria community came together in a big way to celebrate the grand opening of the Astoria Love Family Enrichment Center (FEC) on Saturday, November 1! Over 350 guests walked through the doors, marking the largest turnout for any FEC opening. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with laughter, music, and connection that truly reflected the rich diversity and spirit of Astoria.
Guests enjoyed an afternoon celebration featuring henna painting, music, raffles, delicious food, and an incredible traditional Mexican dance performance by El Grupo de Ballet de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo. The energy and joy were palpable as community members of all ages explored the new space. New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Council Member Tiffany Cabán, and ACS Commissioner Jess Dannhauser and his team, joined us to celebrate, and praised the new center.
This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of our FEC team—Connor, Charnell, Arely, and Tasmeem—and our Riis staff, especially Associate Executive Director for Children, Youth, and Family Services Desiree Lewis. Special thank you to the board members who joined us at the celebration, and to the members of the FEC advisory board who were instrumental in the design and planning of the center.
The Astoria Love FEC Grand Opening was more than a ribbon-cutting; it was a celebration of community, collaboration, and a bright future. Shout out to the following sponsors for their generous support: Museum of Nostalgia, Target, The Coffee Lab, Starbucks Coffee, Lockwood, Chanos, and the Astoria Bookshop.
