Volunteer Opportunities

Riis Settlement builds and strengthens underserved communities in Western Queens and acts as a catalyst for change.

Immigrant Services

Conversation Partners

Engage in English conversation with Intermediate-Advanced students in small groups during evening classes. Sometimes there is open conversation and games, and, at other times teachers plan focused activities based upon what they have been working on in class.

Location: IS 126 (31-51 21st Street)

Time: Tuesday, 7:15-8:30 p.m.

ESOL Computer Lab Volunteer

Assist ESOL students in the computer lab. All computers have the most recent version of Rosetta Stone, and students work on a variety of projects supplemental to their classroom instruction.

Location: Queensbridge (10-25 41st St.)

Time: Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. – Noon

Citizenship Tutors

Some of our legal clients and citizenship students need extra help studying for the civics portion of the citizenship test, which involves 100 questions about the values and history of the U.S. Tutors meet individually with students at mutually convenient times to go over the questions and contextualize information. We have study materials available in the office.

Classroom Aides/Other

Volunteers interested in pursuing a career in teaching ESOL sometimes work as aides with teachers during classroom hours. Do you speak another language or have special skills that might help our program or our students? Let us know and we will try and utilize them.

Workshops

Middle School Students

Conduct workshops with middle school students as a part of our after-school program. Workshops should be fun and informative, with themes ranging from financial literacy, career awareness, college awareness, culinary and nutrition, or we can work with your own ideas

Location: I.S. 126 (31-51 21st St.)

Time: Friday, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Financial Literacy

Volunteers will provide workshops on a variety of financial topics tailored to our senior citizens, youth, and immigrant populations. Topics can range from writing wills, preparing income tax returns, opening up a bank account, to sound financial planning and more. We can work around your schedule.

Adolescent After-school Activities

Club Leaders

Lead a club for adolescents as a part of our after-school program. We are looking for talented, passionate people who have interests in different extracurricular activities. We are open to new ideas. Leaders are expected to commit one to two hours of their time each week. Suggested club activities include photography, dance, sports, art, crochet and games.

Time: Monday – Friday, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. We can work around your schedule.

Young Men Mentors

We are looking for adult men to serve as role models and provide additional support for our Young Men’s Club.

Location: Queensbridge (10-25 41st St)

Time: Monday, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Teen Mentors

We are looking for volunteers to provide additional support and lead fun activities with our teen program at Ravenswood.

Location: Ravenswood (35-40 21st St)

Time: Monday – Friday, 6:00-10:00 p.m. (Flexible)

Sports Clinics

Volunteers interested in sports, specifically cricket, soccer and volleyball, are encouraged to work with our sports clinics program. Provide support and play with our middle school students.

Location: IS 126 (31-51 21st St.)

Time: Monday – Friday 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. (Flexible)

Tutors and Test Prep

Hold SAT test prep sessions with our adolescent students.

Location: Queensbridge (10-25 41st St)

Time: Wednesday, 4:00- 5:00 p.m.

Tutoring

We are looking for committed tutors to assist high school students with their homework, and general subject testing for our after-school program. Topics in demand include math, global and English Language Arts (ELA).

Location: Information Technology HS (21-16 44th Road)

Time: Monday-Thursday 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. (Flexible)

Small Group Tutoring

We are looking for tutors to work with elementary students in our pilot small group tutoring sessions to help our most academically-challenged students. We will be focusing on literacy and homework help.

Location: PS 166 (33-09 35th Ave)

Time: Monday-Friday 3:00 -5:30 p.m. (Flexible)
