Riis Settlement offers many volunteer opportunities throughout the year at our different programs and sites.
We regularly use volunteers as conversation partners and tutors for adult English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) learners in our Immigrant Services program. We also enlist volunteers for tutoring, homework help, and group project supervision in Riis Academy, our four after-school and summer youth development program.
We are particularly proud of our community-based volunteers, many of whom are participants at our Senior Center. These dedicated individuals collect voluntary donations for our meals program, plan events, serve on our Senior Center Council, perform at community events, and translate for non-English speakers as necessary.
Additionally, we often utilize volunteers, including many from New York Cares, for event-based and time-specific activities such as service days, arts projects, and holiday meals and celebrations. Volunteers from local business organizations also play a key role at Riis Settlement, from our Tai Chi instructor, who works at nearby MetLife, to the dozens of Citi volunteers who prepare and serve over 800 healthy meals at our annual Fall Family Feast. Also, volunteers from community partner TransCanada, which operates the nearby Ravenswood Power Generating Station, serve as volunteers at our annual Asthma Education and Screening Day.
