Staffer Lhamar Urbina-Davis on Goals and Growth

Lhamar Urbina-Davis began working at Riis Academy-Ravenswood in 2008.  He is a group leader for the after-school program. After graduation from high school in 2007, Mr. Urbina-Davis decided to use his energy to give back to the community. He has worked for Riis Settlement for six years. “They (Riis Settlement) helped me to become the person I am now,” he said. Mr. Urbina-Davis is 25 years old and is a second-year college student studying business.

Mr. Urbina-Davis is a fan of chess and sports programs. “I work mainly with teens and I also coach basketball and football,” he said. Out of these two, his favorite game is basketball because he loves physical exercise and competition. He also favors chess. “I like chess because it forces you to think before you act,” Mr. Urbina-Davis said.

Mr. Urbina-Davis likes watching the progress made by the children who participate in Riis Settlement’s after-school program. As each year passes he sees the children grow and learn. This is what he enjoys the most.

He also takes particular pleasure in seeing a child pursue their goals and put in lots of hard work. “When they can’t get something done, and then they reach that goal, it makes me most happy,” he shared. One of Mr. Urbina-Davis’ students thought he would never be a good three-point-shooter. After exercise and training he reached that formerly unattainable goal. “He worked hard on that, and he is a really good three-point-shooter now,” remarked Lhamar.

While Mr. Urbina-Davis is working to help his students pursue their ambitions, he’s also on his way to fulfilling a personal passion. “My own personal dream is to coach college basketball,” said Mr. Urbina-Davis. After college graduation, he plans to keep working for Riis Settlement’s program and then become a professional or college basketball coach.

At Riis Settlement, children often arrive to the program early in life. Many sign up when they are in elementary school then continue through high school until they are adults ready for college. “So, I see them grow a lot,” he said. As everyone on the Riis Academy-Ravenswood team, Mr. Urbina-Davis wishes all the young people well. He hopes that “whatever dreams they have, they will be able to accomplish them.”
