Spring Over to Riis Settlement for Great Events

There are a number of exciting events coming up that we hope you’ll support!

One of our special initiatives for this year is our “Read-for-Riis! Read-a-thon” which is designed to encourage literacy among our young people, encourage our community to support and take ownership of the literacy efforts of our youth and serve as a fundraiser for our organization. We are looking to engage our Riis Academy participants in grades kindergarten through 12th in reading picture and chapter books over a five-week period between March 9th and April 14, 2014. “Our aim is to help our kids fall in love with reading while  performing a community service by helping to build support for their center,” said Aimee Simpierre, Director of Development and Communications. If you’d like to make a donation to support our youth, please click here and indicate “Riis Read-a-thon” in the donation dedication box. We are proud to count Lukas Lighting, Astoria Bookshop and Enigma Bookstore among our current sponsors!

On Friday, March 28, Riis Settlement will unveil a newly Asthma Van Ribbon Cutting 3.28.14-JPGrenovated pediatric asthma mobile unit that is providing treatment directly to children just outside of our Queensbridge Houses headquarters on Tuesdays and Fridays. A comprehensive health care team, including a pulmonologist, pediatrician, respiratory therapist and social worker from the Pediatric Asthma Center at New York Hospital Queens staffs the mobile unit. The asthma care program is the result of a partnership with TransCanada, the New York City Economic Development Corporation and New York Hospital Queens.

Riis Settlement is proud to be hosting a number of upcoming financial literacy workshops sponsored by Citibank and Amalgamated Bank. Topics to be covered include “Money Sense-Basic Banking,” “Budgeting” and “Identity Theft.” Find more information here.

This May 17th, Riis Settlement will hold its 16th Annual Spring Arts festival featuring amazing displays of talent from our participants and fun for the whole family.

Stay tuned to our  facebook and Twitter pages for the most recent updates on all of these exciting initiatives.
