Riis Settlement is 125!

To serve others is an honor. To have done it consistently within the city of New York for over 125 years, is an occasion for celebration. On November 6, 2014, friends and supporters of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement in Western Queens will gather at the majestic Museum of the City of New York for a gala honoring our 125 years of work building community and self-sufficiency among the residents of greater Western Queens and the trailblazers who have helped us succeed.

Save the date for our 125th Anniversary Gala - November 6, 2014

We invite you to join us as we mark this once-in-a-lifetime milestone. We will be honoring three amazing individuals including former Executive Director of Riis Settlement Mr. William T. Newlin, who for 24 years served as a catalyst for tremendous change in the greater Western Queens community. Under his leadership, Riis Settlement’s operations expanded to five campuses in Long Island City and Astoria, the program portfolio grew to include services for older adults and immigrants, and the organization’s budget grew from $100,000 to over $3 million. We will honor the Hon. Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, representative for the 37th Assembly District in Queens County, for her support of and advocacy for our programs. Among her many achievements, she chairs the Committee on Education and has led efforts to achieve class size reduction, universal Pre-K, middle school initiatives and other measures that benefit the 3+ million school children of NY State including Riis Settlement after-school participants. We will also honor Christine Sherwood, Managing Director of Citi Cards. Along with leading large-scale marketing operations at Citi Cards, she is an active member of Citi’s Long Island City Board of Directors, whose mission is to improve the daily quality of life, culture and working environment for Long Island City-based Citi employees. With the support of Ms. Sherwood, our partnership with Citi Cards has strengthened our community and the success of many of our programs.

The gala will draw individuals who work in the nonprofit, political, corporate and community-building sectors at the local state, national and international levels. In addition, we are proud to name Citi Cards, Ernst & Young, BlackRock and Flushing Bank among our many sponsors. But the celebration will not be complete without you! If you would like to be part of this celebration honoring one of the oldest and most vibrant Settlement Houses in New York and do your part to support the power of local, community based organizations to make change, then purchase your ticket today and meet us at the Museum of the City of New York on November 6. If you’d like to place an ad or send celebratory greetings to Riis Settlement or any of our honorees in the commemorative journal contact Aimee Simpierre, Director of Development and Communications: asims@riissettlement.org or 718-784-7447 x116. All revenue raised will go toward helping the children, seniors and immigrants in Western Queens who are most vulnerable to economic insecurity achieve social and financial self-sufficiency. Also keep up with us online and at our Twitter hashtag #RSis125. See you there!
