Our Immigrant Services program offers essential services to the community.

ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages
Riis Settlement offers free classes to help immigrants gain English skills to survive and thrive in New York City. Instruction helps students develop language skills and knowledge of community systems and resources to reach their greatest potential and act as catalysts for change. Classes also include:


  • Volunteer English conversation partners
  • Presentations and workshops to inform students about community resources and services and their rights as residents of New York City
  • Advocacy and civic engagement activities incorporated into instruction
  • Computer assisted instruction including Rosetta Stone and project-base learning

ESOL Class Schedule

Morning Program – 3 levels of instruction

Location: Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House

Schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Time: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.


Evening Program – 5 levels of instruction

Location: Astoria

Schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Time: 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Case Management

Our full-time case manager provides individualized assistance to help registered students set and reach their goals. Through a network of partner organizations, we connect students with services such as:


  • Health care
  • Employment and training programs
  • Public benefits
  • Mental health services
  • Adult basic education and GED programs
  • Post-secondary education

Citizenship Classes

Legal permanent residents preparing for the naturalization exam may enroll in weekly citizenship study sessions to improve their knowledge of United States history and civics.


Immigration Legal Services

An experienced immigration attorney assists students with existing or potential immigration cases such as:


  • Naturalization
  • Petitions for family members
  • Adjustments of status
  • Visas
