IMMIGRANT SERVICES

Immigrant Services offers education, case management and legal services that support immigrants on their journey towards self-sufficiency in the United States. Learning English is the first step for many immigrants to be successful in work, education and civic life and is also the gateway into our Immigrant Services program. We value the contributions of immigrants and celebrate the diversity they bring to our communities.

Our Approach

  • Diversity in Learning: We welcome immigrants from a variety of educational backgrounds, ages and cultures.  We believe every member of the classroom has something to teach and encourage students not only to learn English, but to draw upon their own experiences and learn from those of their classmates.
  • Resources and Support:  Our instructors and staff are committed to ensuring that immigrants enrolled in our ESOL program have access to the resources and support they need to navigate the complex systems and institutions of New York City.
  • Caring Community:  Our program is a welcoming and safe space where individuals from all cultures are celebrated and supported as they overcome personal challenges and stresses.
  • Civic Participation:  We promote the full participation and leadership of immigrants so they can advocate for positive change in their communities.

What we do

  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes help over 450 immigrants annually gain the necessary language skills to survive and thrive in New York City. Instruction includes:
    • Content-based curriculum helping immigrants navigate daily life
    • Listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar skills
    • English conversation practice with volunteers (in some levels)
    • Advocacy and civic engagement activities

Students can register for classes in September, January or April.

  • Case management assists enrolled ESOL students to access needed benefits and services for themselves and their families.  Through a network of partner organizations, we connect students with:
    • Health insurance and primary health care
    • Employment and job training
    • Public benefits
    • Mental health services
    • GED preparation and post-secondary education
  • Immigration legal services are provided by an experienced immigration attorney who helps registered students and their families with naturalization, petitions for family members, adjustments of status, visas and more.
  • Weekly citizenship classes enable legal permanent residents preparing for the naturalization exam to improve their knowledge of United States history and civics.
