On Thursday, November 18th, the Riis Settlement Senior Center hosted a Thanksgiving celebration for over 90 local community members.  Many of our participants helped decorate the halls of our Queensbridge building and cafeteria to make it look festive and welcoming for our guests.  There was a delicious menu of food, including turkey, stuffing, salad, ham, green beans, cornbread and rice. Special thanks goes to Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer and their staff for stopping by to serve food and talk to participants about the importance of the holiday. The Senior Center Thanksgiving celebration was fun-filled family treat for everyone!

Later that week, on Saturday, November 19th, Riis Settlement hosted a turkey raffle from 10:00am to 1:00pm in our Queensbridge center.  Our civic-minded neighbor, the Queensbridge Pharmacy, raffled off 40 turkeys and 20 pharmacy gift certificates to a crowd of over 250 community residents. Also, Ms. Cynthia Davis from the Floating Hospital stopped by to raffle off First Aid kits to the crowd.  Staff from Riis Settlement acted as the event’s auctioneers and one of our Senior Center members welcomed guests throughout the day along with our partner Ms. Elaine Muratore from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.  Also present were Ms. Miriam Villanueva and Ms. Lydia Green from Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer’s office and Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan’s office to greet the crowd and show support for the community. Riis Settlement is proud to be involved in events like these that bring the community together and it was wonderful to see raffle winners leave with prizes and turkeys in hand!
