In keeping with the Ravenswood/ Cornerstone Community Center’s science and technology theme of “Heal the World,” Riis Settlement hosted a raw food workshop presented by Rawstar Café Restaurant of Brooklyn.  Middle school students from our after-school programs at Ravenswood/Cornerstone and I.S. 126 were invited to participate in “cooking” and tasting raw foods. Some of the tasty delights included blueberry, banana, and strawberries pies with crusts made from fresh raw pine nuts and pizza with bell peppers, nuts, and sun-dried tomatoes.

Rawstar Café Restaurant provided an excellent platform for teaching students the benefits of raw and organic cooking. Within the coming weeks, middle school students in the program will learn to grow their own vegetables using NDFT Hydroponics; a program developed through Cornell University that offers hands-on, science-based program targeted to elementary, middle and high school youth. The program integrates multiple science disciplines into a comprehensive model that uses innovative, experiential activities to teach science and its application to the real world.

Rawstar Café offers a wide range of Caribbean-influenced raw, vegan foods in a cozy, comfortable setting in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.  We thank Rawstar for offering the young people at Ravenswood an opportunity to experience a new approach to wholesome, healthy, yet delicious food!
