At Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House, the holidays are a time to say thank you and reflect back on a year of growth and progress in the community. Thanks to your partnership and support, we see individuals and families achieve social, educational and economic self-sufficiency every day. I'd like to take a moment to introduce you to two of these community members and express our deepest gratitude on their behalf:

Mrs. Frances Smith and Mr. John D. Smith, Jr. have lived in Queensbridge for nearly 60 years. They have watched the neighborhood change over time and have always stood out as engaged, committed community leaders. Both have been involved in countless committees, efforts and activities to keep Queensbridge the vibrant, dynamic neighborhood that it remains today. This year, Mr. Smith was recognized by Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer with an African American Heritage Award for his years of service and dedication.
When asked why they stay in Queensbridge, the young-at-heart couple enthusiastically pointed to Riis Settlement, particularly the Queensbridge Riis Senior Center, as a major reason for their happiness. "They have excellent programs for health, music, movies, dance, performers, meals with friends, trips, parties. Everything we want to do- we do here." These wise and respected community members are not resting on their laurels -they continue to lead the way for residents of all ages. We are thrilled that they are part of our Riis Family!

With partners like you, we can truly be a catalyst for change for the Western Queens community.
Again, I thank you in advance for your continued support and wish you the best for the holidays and a Happy New Year!
Warmly,
