A Message from the Executive Director

It is with great pride that I present Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House’s Annual Report for fiscal year 2010. Despite the persistent financial difficulties facing our city, state and national economies, we have continued to grow and change in response to the evolving needs of the Western Queens community.  From the opening of two new campuses at our Riis Academy for youth, to the initiation of citizenship classes for immigrants, to the expansion of our health and wellness activities for seniors, Riis Settlement continues to be the leading social service provider in the area.   None of this growth would have been possible without the support and wise counsel of our retiring Board Chairman, Flemming Heilmann and Board Member Ann Pfohl Kirby, who is moving on after more than 20 years of service.  I would also like to acknowledge our dedicated staff, funders, community partners, parents and, most importantly, our participants, who work hard every day to fulfill our mission to act as a catalyst for change, so that we can remain “not just a place to go, but a place to grow.”
